I think she might have noticed the black guy but either didn’t trust herself enough to admit it or simply couldn’t just stop & tell him “Hold on, you’re black & I was giving direction to a white guy?” because that would just sound plain wrong and offensive. Funny stuff.
Thats the neccesary part of the illusion. The subject thinks that they “subconsciously” replace the person they were talking to with the portrait (the best ones really stare as it goes past) and thus their mind discards it, leaving them with an essential blank slate to work on.
