Sagres, the base of Henry’s navigation career. With observatory and lighthouse. Introduced Henry’s personal character and his multi-race and
multi-religion task force. The task force improved compasses and ships, and brought mathematics and astronomy into navigation.
Navigation was a well-planned plan led by the Portuguese state for 200 years, and not by merchants. After some 20 years of study, the task force
understood Atlantic Ocean more. Sailors began their first expeditions.
The contents of Geographia also made Henry curious. At the same time, the great and grave demand of pepper and other spices pushed Europeans to seek an alternative route for it. Spices’ role in food preservation, Arabic merchants domination in spices trade, and the control of land route by Ottoman Empire mentioned. The exploration of sea route was come after the defeats of land war.
It is simple question:
what has china, the chinese been doing the last 500 years.
Truth… nothing.
Missed all of the following: Still 70% peasants-farmers.
1. Science…. Scientific Revolution
2. Industry…. Industrial Revolution
3. Democracy…legal-rational rule
4. Alphabet… primative and barbaric, ugly writing system.
What has china been doing the last 500, 1000 years.
Simple answer: nothing.
Henry’s birth in 1394, and he was the third son of Joao (John) I. Renaissance from Italy. Science and Humanities spread to whole Europe.
Ptolemy’s book, Geographia, a book with a history of about 1200 years, was re-published in Europe in 1406. It enlightened Europeans at that time. With today’s knowledge, Geographia is not correct in many ways, but it was a better guide for Europeans in 15th Century.
Cabo da Roca (Cape Roca), a last tip of Europe. The line between land and sea. Gil Eane’s 1434 (the clips says 1443) sailing beyond Cape Bojador. A breakthrough of European’s sailing, and it was pushed not only Henry’s patron, but also by a heart of adventure, the chase of wealth and being religious.
